Douglas Johnson, Psy.D.
Dr. Douglas Johnson was born in Lima, Peru. He graduated with a degree in architecture from the National University of Engineering in Peru, at a very young age. When he was twenty years old certain circumstances in his life led him to search for spiritual answers. In order to improve his spiritual searching, he enrolled in the Southern Baptist Seminary where he obtained his Masters in Divinity. After Seminary school, he was invited to work in the Jungles of Peru, helping out the missionaries with building houses and improving the water and sewer systems of the small towns in the Jungles of Peru and Brazil. Later, he returned to the capital of Peru to work part time as a Pastor and Architect.
These jobs demanded that he develops strong relationships with people of different backgrounds. These people had the same problems as everyone else, but coped with them differently. Again he was learning through experience and through the relationships he created with the people of various cultures. In 1988, he received a phone call from his father who lived in Tennessee. His father asked him to come to see him because he was not felling very well and wanted to see his two granddaughters.
Throughout his journey in the USA he has worked counseling people from many different backgrounds: Anglo-Americans, Afro-Americans, Mexican-Americans, Cubans, Puerto Ricans, South American and Central Americans-but the group that captured my attention the most were the severely and persistently mentally ill population. In order to understand them better, he attended Florida Atlantic University where he obtained a BA degree in Psychology, and Carlos Albizu University where he attained a doctorate in clinical psychology (Psy.D.). He is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA), the Florida Psychological Association (FPA) and the American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC).
